I didn’t have what you’d call a “traditional” upbringing.

I Was Raised In an Extremely Religious Household

The only music we were allowed to listen to was church music.

 

That meant if it had drums or a guitar in it, it was banned in our house.

 

So while most kids my age were singing along to all the latest hits from Smash Mouth, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit…

 

I was listening to choir music.

 

While they were reading Harry Potter...

 

I was reading about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

 

And while they were watching rated R movies or playing Halo...

 

I was watching sermons on tape or playing chess.

 

In fact, I didn’t utter my first swear word until I was 23.

 

So you can understand why, as a kid, my only dream was to go into the ministry…

 

It was all I knew.

 

And when it came time to go to college…

 

Which was on the same campus where I went to grade school and high school...

 

I Decided to Double-Major in Church Ministries
and Bible

 

By this point, I’d already met the love of my life, Jackie.
And we got married in 2014.

 

I was 21 years old.

 

As happy as I was, that was also the moment when the seeds of doubt started tiptoeing their way into the back of my mind.
“Do I really want to deliver sermons for the rest of my life?” I wondered.

 

I’d always felt the urge to make money, become successful, and have an impact on the world…

 

I wasn’t sure exactly where it came from, but I knew it was there...

 

And now, for the first time, I was beginning to see the disconnect between the career path I was on and what I really wanted out of life...

 

But I wasn’t ready to change direction just yet.

 

And in the meantime, I needed a way to make some money while I was studying.

 

So a friend of mine got me into selling solar panels door-to-door...

 

Turns out, I was pretty good at it.

 

I started making more money than my friends who worked at Home Depot or the local grocery store, and even some of my friends’ parents who worked full time jobs

 

And more importantly, I actually had FUN doing it.

 

This made me feel even MORE conflicted about my future with the church…

 

Because selling door-to-door excited me in a way I’d never really experienced before.

 

Then, fast-forward four years later...

 

After I graduated from college, I had what I like to call a “slow-motion epiphany”…

 

I say that because for the first time...

 

I was finally able to accept something I’d known deep down for a long time...

 

I Was Ready to Abandon My Future Career
as a Church Minister

 

Admitting this to myself was actually a massive relief...

 

And lifted a huge burden off my shoulders.

 

Because the entrepreneurial “itch” I’d started out with in college…

 

Had blossomed into something much deeper and more powerful.

 

I couldn’t resist it anymore.

 

So after college, my wife and I decided to move up to Fresno, California.

 

But when we got there, the only way I could provide for us was to get back into door-to-door sales.

 

I mean, what else could I do?

 

I had an unaccredited degree in Bible and Church Ministries and the only work I had done well with was door to door...

 

So I went to work selling alarms.

 

And, feeling newly empowered by my decision to abandon the ministry...

 

I did even BETTER than when I was selling solar panels.

 

In fact, at the end of my first full year doing door-to-door in Fresno...

 

I’d managed to earn six figures for the first time in my life.

 

Now this had ALWAYS been a big goal of mine…

 

But...

 

Instead of Feeling Like I’d Finally “Made It”
After Earning Six Figures...

 

...I Felt More Lost Than
Ever Before

 

At first, it didn’t make sense.

 

“Why don’t I feel better about myself?”

I was still missing out on the time and location freedom I desperately wanted.

 

I just couldn’t stomach it anymore.

 

So I quit.

 

And with my back against the wall, I asked myself...

 

“So What the Hell Am I Supposed
to Do Now?”

 

There I was, starting all over…. AGAIN.

 

From scratch.

 

With two useless (and unaccredited) degrees.

 

And it’s like not I could just move back in with my parents and crash on their couch until I figured it all out, either…

 

I had a wife to support.

 

We’d just bought a house in Fresno, so I had mortgage payments to make.

 

The pressure was ON.

 

I had to come up with a new plan, and fast.

 

I wracked my brain, trying to figure out what I wanted to do…
Did I want to become a paramedic?

 

Police officer?

 

Maybe work construction?

 

Or go back to landscaping and mowing lawns like I did in my teens?

 

Truth be told...

 

I strongly considered joining the firefighting department as a chaplain, based on my grandfather’s advice…
Just because he thought I’d be able to cut the line and get hired right away.

 

Those were dark days.

 

Honestly, if you had bumped into me on the street back then…

 

You would’ve seen the sweat pouring down my forehead...

 

Smelled the desperation oozing out of my pores...

 

And seen the fear in my eyes.

 

That was rock bottom for me.

 

But thankfully, my search for a new career is how I discovered the world of personal development and then...

 

How I Stumbled Onto Podcasting

 

You see, despite wanting to be a church minister growing up…
I’d never been a big reader.

 

In fact, it had become a bit of a running joke in my family that “Travis doesn’t like to read”...

 

So when I found out I could consume all of this amazing personal development content in audio form…

 

I was immediately hooked.

 

I started spending my days listening to audiobooks and podcasts from people like Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, and John C. Maxwell…

 

As all the motivational and inspirational content I was consuming every day began to reprogram the way I thought about money, work, success, and my future...

 

One day, an idea struck me like a lightning bolt...

 

“I Should Start My Own Podcast!”

 

I didn’t have a clue it was going to be about...

 

But I knew I wanted to start my own show.

 

So I started doing some research.

 

And what I discovered shocked me…

 

For starters...

 

1) Podcasts Have Less Competition Than Written or Video Content

 

One of my biggest concerns was that it was “too late” to start a podcast.

 

That I had already missed the boat.

 

So I did a little digging…

 

Turns out, there are:

- 500 million blogs
- 35 million YouTube channels
- 1 million books published every year

 

But as of April 2021, there are only 1 million podcasts in TOTAL.

 

That means for every podcast out there, there are 35 YouTube channels and 500 blogs.

 

And that’s including all the inactive podcasts that aren’t even producing episodes anymore.

 

So really, podcasting is still in its infancy…

 

Which means there is still massive opportunity for anyone looking to start their own show.

 

2) Podcast Listeners Consume More Content

 

According to PodcastInsights…

 

80% of podcast listeners consume all or most of each episode.

 

And when you consider that most podcasts are 30 minutes to an hour long…

 

Sometimes even two to three hours...

 

That is a LOT of time spent consuming someone’s content.

 

Think about how many articles you’d have to read to hit that…

 

Now why does this matter?

 

Because trust is the epitome of content marketing.

 

And the more time someone spends consuming your content...

 

The more likely they are to trust you and want to do business with you.

 

Next up...

 

3) Podcaster Listeners Are More Educated and Make More Money

 

This finding surprised me the most.

 

According to the research...

 

- 45% of podcast listeners have a household income over $75K, compared to 35% for the total population.
- 27% of podcast listeners have a 4-year college degree, compared to 19% for the total population.

 

So, this means…

 

Podcast listeners represent a more educated and more affluent segment of the market than people on blogs, YouTube, or social media.

 

Which was exciting for me…

 

Because I was eager to turn my podcast into a real business.

 

4) Podcast Listeners Are More Active on Social Media

 

Not only are podcast listeners more educated and affluent than the average American...

 

They’re also much more active on social media.

 

In fact, 94% are active on at least one channel, compared to 81% for the total population.

 

They’re also more likely to follow brands and companies on social media.

 

Plus...

 

5) Podcast Listeners Even Enjoy the Ads On Their Favorite Shows

 

Most people are pretty skeptical of ads these days…

 

Especially on social media.

 

But not podcast listeners.

 

Case in point...

 

69% of them say that podcast ads have made them aware of new products or services.

 

That’s a massive number.

 

And lent further support to the idea that I could build a real business around my podcast.

 

So, taking all this into consideration…

 

I decided to go “all in.”

 

One of the first podcasters I came across was a guy named John Lee Dumas…

 

His podcast was a daily interview show called Entrepreneurs on Fire.

 

But what was so cool about John…

 

Was that he published these monthly income reports…

 

Showing exactly how successful his podcast business was.
Seeing how much profit he was generating for himself each month was an eye-opening moment…

 

Giving me even more fuel for the fire to start my own show...

 

So when he put out a call inviting listeners to a private mastermind at his mansion in Puerto Rico…

 

I scraped together every dollar I had, and then...

As we hung out next to the ocean in beautiful, sunny Puerto Rico…

 

Sipping on delicious mai-tais by the beach…

 

And feasting on fresh-caught lobster and crab every night...

 

John walked us through his entire podcasting system, step-by-step.

 

Now, I was expecting some complicated strategy full of fancy tech tools and ninja marketing “hacks” I’d never heard of...

 

But his approach was surprisingly simple.

 

The goal was to have a KILLER launch…

 

By racking up a ton of reviews in the first few days...

 

So you could jump up onto the “New & Noteworthy” chart on iTunes.

 

Apparently, hitting this chart was like the Holy Grail for podcast traffic…

 

And if you could get your show on there, you’d be rewarded with a flood of traffic, listeners, and downloads.

 

Only problem was…

 

At the time, the “New & Noteworthy” was frozen for some reason.

 

No one knew why…

 

But no new shows had been added to it in over a year.
So when I got back home…

 

I started mapping out my launch plan.

 

I’d already decided I wanted my show to be about networking…

 

Even though I didn’t know the first thing about it.

 

I followed John’s blueprint to the letter…

 

Knowing full well that I’d need to get my show into the Top Charts if I wanted a shot at early success...

 

I launched my show, Build Your Network, on August 12, 2017...
Managed to rack up lots of positive reviews...

 

And somehow, I managed to crack the Top Charts:

I couldn’t believe it.

 

I sat in front of my computer in a daze…

 

With butterflies in my stomach, and a tear in my eye...

 

Just waiting for the listens and downloads to start shooting up...

 

I waited…

 

And waited…

 

And then I waited some more...

 

But instead of the traffic windfall I was expecting...

 

I hardly got any traffic at all.

 

“Is there something wrong with my computer?!” I wondered, frantically hitting refresh every five seconds...

 

Nope.

 

Turns out...

 

Even Though I Hit the Top Charts

 

My Launch Was a Disaster

 

The “killer launch” strategy was a complete flop.

 

I think I got something like 142 new listens…

 

A tiny fraction of what I was expecting.

 

So a few days later…

 

After I’d managed to recover from the sting of what felt like the ultimate failure...

 

I did a little “post-mortem” on why my launch bombed.

 

The first thing that occurred to me was…

 

Back in 2012, when John started Entrepreneurs On Fire, there were only 2,000 podcasts on iTunes.

 

So the available traffic was spread across far fewer shows.

 

Meanwhile, when I launched my show in 2017, there were already 450,000+ podcasts on iTunes — an increase of over 200X.

 

That’s when I started to connect the dots…

 

And it occurred to me that the game had changed.

 

You see, most mainstream podcasting advice goes something like this...

 

Step 1: Have a killer launch so you can hit “New & Noteworthy.”

 

Step 2: Use that traffic to build an audience.

 

Step 3: Use that audience to get better guests.

 

Step 4: Wait for your audience to get big enough to monetize

 

Step 5: Use that money and credibility to get higher-level guests.

 

Can you see the problem here?

 

This approach incorrectly assumes two things…

 

First, that hitting “New & Noteworthy” will deliver a windfall of traffic to your show…

 

Which simply isn’t true anymore…

 

And second, that you can grow a big audience all by yourself...

 

Even if you don’t have marketing experience and have never done anything in the industry before.

 

Now coming back to my story for a moment...

 

At that moment in time, I realized that if I wanted to grow my podcast and turn it into a legitimate business…

 

I needed to do more than just hit the Top Charts for my niche...

 

I needed to book top guests for my show.

 

Highly-credible authority figures that my audience would know, like, and trust.

 

So, I started by making a list of my Dream 100 guests…

 

And began reaching out to them.

 

But...

 

Since No One Had Ever Heard of Me or My Show,

 

I Struggled to Book Top Guests

 

In fact, all I got were messages rejecting my invite...

 

Some rejections were polite…

 

Some rejections weren’t...

 

But the bottom line was, nobody wanted to come on my show.

 

I was stuck in this weird “Catch-22”....

 

Where I couldn’t grow my audience without booking better guests for my show…

 

And I couldn’t convince better guests to come on my show without a bigger audience.

 

I didn’t know what to do.

 

That’s why I call this “old school” strategy the Credibility Last Approach.

 

And it's the underlying reason why 99% of podcasters fail to launch, grow, and monetize their show.

 

More on that in a moment...

 

But considering this strategy was clearly NOT working for me…

 

I started testing a new method of reaching out to potential guests…

 

An “upside down” approach, if you will…

 

That produced almost immediate results:

You see...

 

Instead of waiting for my show’s credibility to magically manifest itself after hundreds of episodes...

 

I Discovered How to “Engineer” My Show’s

 

Credibility in Advance

 

So regardless of how few listeners or downloads I had...

 

I was able to start booking top guests right away...

 

By subtly influencing the way top guests perceived my show when I reached out to them.

 

And getting people like Ryan Stewman, Ivan Meisner, and Patrick Bet-David say “yes” had an almost instantaneous effect on how my listeners perceived ME...

 

It allowed me to essentially “borrow” the credibility of my guests…

 

Drive massive amounts of trust...

 

Rapidly grow my audience...

 

And start monetizing my show with less than 200 downloads per episode.

 

I call this new approach The Credibility First Method.

 

Because instead of waiting for credibility to build up after producing hundreds and hundreds of episodes...

 

I focused on creating credibility first...

 

Both in the eyes of the guests I wanted to book…

 

And in the eyes of the listeners I wanted to tune in.

 

That credibility turned out to be the missing link...

 

The “secret ingredient” I needed to reach more listeners, grow my audience, and monetize my podcast.

 

Here’s how it works…

 

Step #1: The Perfect Launch

 

Even though my own launch turned out to be a disaster…

 

Having a perfect launch is still important.

 

I’ve seen it time and time again with my students...

 

Because nailing your launch can create massive momentum and still drive lots of organic listeners and downloads to your show.

 

So, how do you manage that?

 

By investing in a few key assets to make your show look professional and credible.

 

Such as…

 

- Hiring an agency to edit and upload your podcast so it sounds clean and polished

 

- Hiring a designer to craft attention-grabbing cover art that drives clicks

 

- Hiring a voice actor to narrate your show’s introduction

 

- Drumming up 75-100 ratings & reviews through referrals and word-of-mouth

 

Now, there are more cost-effective ways to do this on your own…

 

For example...

 

If you want to edit your own episodes, you don’t need expensive software like Logic or Pro Tools.

 

You can get away with using Garageband on your Mac or Audacity on your PC.

 

Both are free, easy to use, and come with all the features you’ll need to edit your show.

 

And you can always put together your own cover art using a free tool like Canva...

 

But remember…

 

You’re trying to “engineer” credibility in the eyes of your listeners AND your guests.

 

And the more professional your show looks…

 

The more likely top guests are to say “yes!” and come on your show.

 

Step #2: Credibility Hacking

 

Here’s a surprising revelation for you…

 

Your download numbers have nothing to do with whether listeners buy or whether guests agree to come on your show.

 

The only thing that matters is TRUST.

 

Let me explain...

 

When I started to connect with my audience in the early days of my show…

 

I’d always ask them how they heard about me.

 

Every single time, without fail, they’d say the reason they listened to my podcast was...

 

Because they recognized a guest I had on the show.

 

And you know what?

 

These same people were the ones who bought my products and services.

 

This is known as the Law of Association.

 

People will automatically jump to conclusions about you…

 

Based purely on the people you surround yourself with and what they think about those other people.

 

It’s the same reason why big brands hire celebrities to endorse their products.

 

Like Matthew McConaughey driving a Lincoln…

 

Or Shaquille O’Neal hanging out with the General Insurance guy..

 

So here’s where most podcasters go wrong…

 

They make it seem like the train (their show) isn’t going anywhere unless that guest agrees to come on.

 

Like they need that person in order to “leave the station.”

 

But desperation and neediness are NOT effective ways to sell and persuade.

 

What you need to do instead is make them feel like they’re missing the train.

 

As in, “Hey, I’d love for you to be on this train, but it’s leaving with or without you.”

 

That’s how you decrease the resistance to a “yes.”

 

Now, how do you get the first top guest to agree to come on your show?

 

You’ve gotta hustle.

 

It’s not sexy, I know…

 

But it’s the truth.

 

And here’s the good news:

 

Once you’ve landed the first one…

 

The second one is a little easier… the fifth one is even easier than that… and so on and so forth.

 

With that said, I do have a proven 5-step template for reaching out to guests that I’ve developed over the years…

 

Which has helped me land high-profile guests like Grant Cardone, Tom Bilyeu, Aubrey Marcus, Jack Canfield, and many others.

 

And I’ll explain how you can get your hands on this template in just a moment...

Step #3: True Fans

 

Ever heard of Kevin Kelly?

 

He wrote an article back in the day called 1,000 True Fans.

 

The premise was simple:

 

True Fans are people who will buy just about anything you put out there.

 

And if you can build an audience of just 1,000 True Fans…

 

You can essentially “future-proof” your business and unlock the lifestyle of your dreams.

 

Now, I’d add that if you get to even 100 True Fans…

 

You can still build an amazing life that checks just about all the boxes.

 

Because when you have a group of people who resonate with you…

 

With your story…

 

And with your message…

 

They’ll go all in on what you do, and end up doing a ton of promotion for you.

 

And listen...

 

No matter who you are or what you do…

 

There are people out there who WILL resonate with you.

 

So don’t let your inner doubts or fears hold you back from starting your show.

 

I waited way too long to start my show because I was afraid that no one would listen.

 

But looking back on it, that was a mistake...

 

I could be so much further along had I started three to six months earlier.

 

Bottom line is…

 

Focus on building True Fans and your business will take care of itself.

 

On that note, I developed a simple strategy for creating True Fans back in the early days of my show…

 

That was actually so effective that I had to STOP doing it.

 

Something virtually anyone can do…

 

And doesn’t cost a dime, either.

 

You’ll find more details on that a little further down...

 

But finally, we have...

 

Step #4: Monetization

 

Traditionally, the only way to monetize a podcast was sponsorships.

 

And if anyone had a second way to monetize their show…

 

It was selling coaching, courses, masterminds, and other knowledge based products.

 

That’s it.

 

Now, both of these options fall under the category of “audience-facing monetization.”

 

But one day, as I was working with a student to come up with ways for them to better monetize their show...

 

I stumbled on a controversial new way to monetize a podcast, right from the get-go...

 

Through what I call “guest-facing monetization.”

 

You see, instead of monetizing your audience (the traditional approach), you’re monetizing the guests who come on your show.

 

This was a key breakthrough...

 

Because it helped to crystallize another important concept about podcast monetization…

 

That there are five distinct monetization archetypes:

 

1) The Expert (Seth Godin, Tony Robbins)

 

2) The Entertainer (Joe Rogan, Dax Shepard)

 

3) The Brand Builder (Gary Vee, Andy Frisella)

 

4) The Journalist (Me, Tim Ferriss, Jordan Harbinger)
